I had the idea one night to add some napkin rings to the place mats I made for my partner in the Spicing Up The Kitchen Swap. I was throwing ideas around in my head until this one popped in. I think they turned out fabulous, so I thought I’d share with you how to make them!

They are pretty simple, but pack a big punch. And all you need is a few strips of fabric, felt, 1″ webbing, a sewing machine and a glue gun.

I’m in a fun swap on Flickr, Spicing up the Kitchen. It’s been fun to look online for new things to make. My partner really wanted placemats, and I happened to have a charm pack of Bliss by Bonnie & Camille in my stash, which was the perfect color for her kitchen. Here’s what I came up with for her.

And a little tutorial for you!

What you need to make four placemats:
One Charm Pack
3/4 yards of coordinating fabric for front
1 yard backing fabric
1 yard fleece (for batting)
1/2 yard binding fabric

This week’s sewing day was a lot more focused than last! In fact, so far I have worked on exactly one thing. But at least I got it finished!

Have you seen Parisville, by Tula Pink? I am in love with this fabric. I just got a bunch of it last week and couldn’t wait to make it into a dress. I knew to hold up to the bold print (especially the cameo) this dress would have to be special.

I think I accomplished that. I love the puffed sleeves – they just scream Spring to me.

Do you remember back in school where you had to write down one thing, then the next thing that popped into your head, then the next… You know, stream of conscious. That is what my sewing day was like today. Let me outline it for you.

#1. I have strep throat, so I didn’t want to do major sewing. I am, however, dying to get into this stack of fabric:

My mother-in-law is awesome. She remembered me saying one time that I love Art Gallery fabric. So, for Christmas, along with a few cool crafting tools, she went to the fabric store and asked what they had from Art Gallery. I was ecstatic on Christmas morning to open a box with this in it:

I decided right away that I would make myself a skirt with these fabrics from the Botanica collection. And I set out to find myself the perfect pattern to use. That’s where I’m stumped. I still can’t decide!

Please let me introduce you to David Bowie.

No, not that David Bowie. This David Bowie:

Ever since Howard Bannister left me, I’ve been borrowing my mom’s sewing machine. Since August I have not had a machine to call my own… Until I bought my aunt’s amazing computerized industrial machine (along with all of the accessories she has accumulated for it). I am now in sewing heaven.

Sure, David Bowie isn’t very pretty… until you account for talent. This boy has skills. And just like the first David Bowie, I am strangely attracted to him.

Are you like me? When you’re working on a project, do you collect the little bits and pieces because you know they’ll be useful for something?

Well, this time I actually had a good use for the bits and pieces. I like to crochet in all of my free time. (Insert laugh and cough here…) But now that it’s winter, my hands get pretty cold.

Not any more.

When I cut off the sleeves for my girls’ coats, I had the perfect piece left for me. I just cut a hole for my thumb, and there you have it. Super cheap and super comfy to keep me warm while crocheting.

My girls needed new coats. I had a pile of wool sweaters from the thrift store that I planned on felting and cutting up to sew into coats for them, kind of like Lindsay did here.

They have been sitting, felted, for a while now, just waiting for me to cut them up. This morning I finally got around to it. Only, at the last minute I completely changed my design plan.

I pulled out the first sweater for Lottie’s coat and thought “Oh, I really want to keep that turtleneck collar, so I’ll cut that out.” My next thought was “Well, it already has those awesome snowflakes on the front, so keep those intact…”

It’s been a while. We went on vacation, and I’ve been crazy busy since we got back.

I did manage to get my girls outfitted for Halloween. Lottie insisted she wanted to be Perry the Platypus, from Phineas & Ferb. She loves him. She cries when he is sad. She claps and jumps up and down when he is happy.

So here’s what I came up with for Perry:

Blue fleece pants and a fleece jacket (after all, we did have snow a few days before Halloween). A swingin’ fedora. And of course, a platypus tail. I made shoe covers and a beak as well, but she wouldn’t leave them on.

SJS seeks SQM

For those of you not in the know, I will translate the sewing machine singles ad: Single Juki Serger seeks Single Quilting Machine.

Or, the one in which Eunice is looking for her Mr. Larrabee. But wait, you say, Howard Bannister just moved into your house in December, and you loved going into the closet with him! Well, yes, I did. But sadly, Howard Bannister just had too many issues. He really couldn’t stand up to all I put him through. And when I took him in to be repaired for the third time (2nd time for the same issue) I just knew he couldn’t come home with me.
